I am currently leading an unforgettable birding photography workshop in Hokkaido, Japan, and capturing stunning images of the magnificent Steller's Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus). This annual expedition brings photographers up close to one of the world's most extraordinary raptors, offering a unique opportunity to hone photography skills while immersing in the wild beauty of Hokkaido. In this photography workshop, we'll use a chartered boat to photograph these eagles in their natural habitat, ensuring unparalleled access and dynamic shooting angles.
The Steller's Sea Eagle is not only one of the largest diurnal birds of prey in the world but also a dream subject for wildlife photographers. The Steller's Sea Eagle is protected by law, is designated as a National Treasure in Japan, and is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 's Red List of Endangered Species. Around 5000 remain in the wild, and over 2500 visit Japan every winter. They are the heaviest raptors on Earth; these eagles weigh up to 10 kg (22 pounds) and boast a wingspan of 250 cm (8.2 ft). Their blackish-brown plumage contrasts beautifully with white shoulders, tail, and forehead, making them a striking subject against Hokkaido's winter backdrop. Photographing these birds feeding is terrific; they have a razor-sharp, wickedly hooked yellow bill and razor-sharp talons, and they go through their prey with power and precision fast so they don't lose their meal to another raptor. In this photography workshop, we'll use a chartered boat to photograph these eagles in their natural habitat, ensuring unparalleled access and dynamic shooting angles.
Hokkaido's diverse ecosystems make it a haven for photographers.
Did you know the Steller's Sea Eagle shares its skies with legends? Cultures around the world, including the First Nations Peoples of North America, have revered massive mythical birds like thunderbirds. While photographing one remains a dream, the real-life majesty of the Steller's Sea Eagle is awe-inspiring enough.
