Fukushima Cherry Blossom Tours are not the earliest to begin during the flowering season in Japan.  In fact, the sakura that grace Fukushima and other nearby prefectures happen mid to late in the season due to their relatively northern locations on the Japan’s main island of honshu.

The sakura in Fukushima are, however, well worth the waiting.  South of the prefecture’s capital and east of one of the main commercial cities in the prefecture, Koriyama, is Miharu.  Miharu is home to the famous ‘Miharu Takizakura’ which is considered to be the most beautiful cherry blossom tree in all of Japan.  The name directly translated means ‘waterfall cherry blossom’, and once you lay eyes and viewfinder on this amazing sakura specimen you will begin to understand the impact this one tree, with its surrounding cherry blossom brethren, attracts so many photographers every year to document this lasting testimony to the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms.

The Miharu Takizakura has quite a rich history of its own.  The tree is believed to be over 1,000 years old, but due its cultural value, rather than bore into the tree to more closely estimate its precise age, the takizakura is appreciated exclusively as a photo op rather than scientific specimen.  Miharu Takizakura reaches almost twenty meters high and wide, truly becoming a flickering, pink waterfall of sakura petals each spring.
