Giant Wood Spider is one of the biggest spiders in the world. The giant wood spider (Nephila) is a genus of araneomorph spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. They are found in Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan Nephila species are found in warmer regions around the world. The female giant wood spider can be over 50mm, with males growing to about 6mm. Species in Taiwan have been known to reach over 140mm. The giant wood spider capture's and feeds upon many different organisms, ranging from small flies, beetles, cicadas, and locusts. The venom of the giant wood spider is effective on its prey, but there have not been any reported or notable consequences to humans if accidentally bitten. I photographed these giant woods spiders while leading my annual autumn in Japan photo tour; participants are always amazed by their size and colorfulness. Lens I used to photograph these spiders was my Nikon 200mm macro lens which I bought in the early 90's and is still available to buy new in Japan. I recommend to all and to my photographer's and participants on my Japan photo tours to carry along a macro lens and extension tubes, for the micro world and those closeup captures.
