Hokkaido boats many photo worthy locations among its expansive territorial reach north of the main island of Japan.  One of the more noteworthy is Shiretoko Peninsula and the Winter Photography you can enjoy there, especially on a Hokkaido Photo Tour.

The name ‘Shiretoko’ itself is under debate, some say it comes from the Native Ainu Language and means ‘land’s end’, but others say the meaning is ‘where the land protrudes.’  We at Blain Harasymiw Photography invite you come and see the Shiretoko National Park and peninsula and judge for yourself.

While touring the park, you will enjoy a photo tour of breathtaking landscapes with several subalpine tree species represented: Sakhalin fir, Erman’s birch, and Mongolian Oak.  Beyond the area where visitors are allowed, you can also distinguish Siberian dwarf pine trees.  I and other Blain Harasymiw photo tour leaders will help you get as close as possible to capture the best photos from the most advantageous angles. 

The peninsula has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site which allows the local ecosystem to flourish as well as promote net positive biodiversity in the protected area.  Moreover, during winter the drift ice is home to several of Hokkaido’s avian wildlife including Steller’s Sea Eagles that survey the crevices and narrow openings in the ice for their prey.  Nearby on land, you may be able to photograph, Sika deer, Ezo Flying Squirrel and Ezo Red Foxes.  Your photography workshop leader will assist you by getting you to the best locations for your photography.
