Capturing the Winter Magic of Hokkaido - Hokkaido Photo Tour

As the winter chill sets in, a unique adventure awaits in the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan.  This is not just about the breathtaking scenery; it's a chance to connect with nature, improve your photography skills, and experience the enchanting beauty of wildlife—specifically, spotting and photographing the elusive and charming Shima Enaga (Aegithalos caudatus japonicus).  During my annual Hokkaido photo tour, I am delighted to visit and photograph these tiny, snowball-like birds, which have completely stolen my heart.  Imagine encountering a fluffy and adorable bird that looks like it just rolled out of a snowdrift!  The Shima Enaga, also known as the silver-throated tit, is a sight that even the most seasoned birdwatchers will cherish.
Why Join my the Hokkaido Photo Tour?  Whether you are a beginning wildlife photographer or a pro, this tour welcomes all skill levels.  What sets my workshops apart is the guided support and personalized tips tailored to enhance your photography.  The Shima Enaga's particular habitat and behaviours present unique challenges, and it's genuinely beneficial to have someone with local expertise by your side.

The Shima Enaga (Aegithalos caudatus japonicus) is adorable, but they are super fast, tiny birds, so you must be on your toes to photograph them.

Photographing the Shima Enaga (Aegithalos caudatus japonicus) in flight is next to impossible, but it's possible with the right equipment and me by your side.

Shima Enaga is a sweet little cotton puffball-looking bird. I photographed it while leading my annual Hokkaido photography tour.

Each year, I gear up to lead photographers through this winter wonderland.  The opportunity to capture vibrant images of the diving, bouncing snowball beauties is too good to pass up!  Working with your camera in such a mesmerizing environment is both thrilling and rewarding.
Photographing these birds requires the right equipment.  I recommend a super-telephoto lens—my favourites are either a 300mm f/2.8 or a 400mm f/2.8, with X1.4 and X2 TCs, but a 600mm f/4 works beautifully, too.  With the proper setup, you can get that perfect close-up shot, showcasing their delightful expressions and charming features.  Watching them frolic in their natural habitat, protecting their territory, is an experience like no other.
Reflecting on the incredible memories created during these tours, I also look ahead to the future.  I'm sorry, but my Hokkaido 2025 tour is fully booked, but two spots are open for 2026!  Don't miss your chance to be part of this unforgettable experience.
If you're eager to enter the snowy world of the Shima Enaga and capture the enchanting beauty of Hokkaido, reach out!  Together, we can create lasting memories with every click of the shutter.

Let winter be your adventure as we embark on a quest to photograph the fluffiest little wonders of Hokkaido! BOOK 2026 NOW!
