You can't expect to photograph the largest herd of wild Sika deer on our planet by sticking to the beaten tourist track! Annually I lead participant on a Hokkaido Photography Tour, our mode of transport are SUVs, allowing us to traverse rough terrain getting us into the location where herds of sika deer and flocks of eagles are known gather. During our annual winter Japan photo tours, we allow 3-4 days to explore between Nemuro and Rausu a 138km of pristine coastline. When the Ocean is calm, we drive into Rausu to board a chartered boat in the AM that navigates us through pack ice to photograph the Steller's Sea Eagles in their natural feeding habitat on the pack ice. Not every day in Rausu offers calm weather for boating; so we allow for 3-4 days in the region. On the days we can board a vessel to photograph the Eagles for 2-3 hours is a great AM, and then we drive back out of Rausu and continue with a full day of wildlife and landscape photography. While the majority of those staying in Rausu and who are sticking to the beaten tourist track head back to their hotels for a day of editing, or photography seminar. In foul weather, we stay away from Rausu and photograph wildlife and landscapes in the Lake Furenko and Nemuro area where we take up lodgings; it's the perfect spot for wildlife photography adventures.
